Hollywood Movies and modern technologies

Boom, clashes, explosions, fairylands. These are the first words that people I know, think of in connection to a Hollywood movie. Though this is not always the case. Just look at the Oscars this year. Not many of the big winners were connected with the greatest special effects movies.

Boom, clashes, explosions, fairylands. These are the first words that people I know, think of in connection to a Hollywood movie. Though this is not always the case. Just look at the Oscars this year. Not many of the big winners were connected with the greatest special effects movies. I could even say that the only really big visual effects movie to win was Black Panther. That’s a real display of modern digital technology. But what a shocker! Black Panther didn’t get the Oscar for Visual Effects. Instead for Best Music Written for Motion Pictures, Best Costume Design and for Best Production Design. First Marvel movie to win an Academy Award, and not for the astounding special effects. However, I’m pretty sure that all the amazing visuals in the movie, had something to do with this success.

Do you want to find out the latest discoveries in digital and image technology? Sure, go to Hollywood. They always implement the newest discoveries available. And the results are impressive. Want to know how technology evolved? Watch the 1954 movie Godzilla. Now, go watch the 2018 Godzilla – King of the Monsters. That says it all. And even the movies that are not explosive or fairy-like, use all the modern technologies for image and sound recording, editing and enhancement. Nothing new looks like ten years ago. Or in the theaters? These days you can hardly find anything, not 3D. They are real rarities.

Whatever new, you name it, Hollywood uses. The CGI and green screen/suit is already an oldie. Now we have de-aging technology that just starts to show up in movies here and there. I’m sure that in a couple of years it will be used all over the Hollywood production. And now they start exploring the glasses-free technology. Expected to be in theaters in 2020

Hollywood also has a reverse connection with technology. The movies present technologies on screen, years before they become reality. Remember Matrix, or even more recently, Marvel’s Captain America – Civil War or Ant-Man. The present technologies that researchers are still putting together in their labs. We will probably see them at work in a couple of years. Some to enhance Hollywood movies.

So, modern technologies? Made our visual realm better, or even fantastic. Can we still have feelings or a positive reaction to something that is not that digitally enhanced? Critics say that we wouldn’t be able to appreciate something simple anymore and that our imagination is put to sleep. But just look at the Oscars, as I said in the beginning. Or at reactions of people that watch the movie, then read the book, and declare that the book is way better. Despite all visual effects on screen. The strongest example is The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Everybody reading afterward the book was even more impressed with the fantastically written universe. This doesn’t sound like imagination asleep.

The messages have always been delivered, the means differ and they tend to be the best at hand. I could write this article now, with a feather pen and ink on paper. But I still choose my laptop, for efficiency. It’s about delivering the message and decoding it in the best way. Through the optimization of modern technology, Hollywood brings very clear, powerful messages.
